Filming raps on casino documentary; former CBS News correspondent will narrate

"Casinos in Mississippi: Worth the Gamble?" wrapped up production this week. The documentary was directed by Dr. Brad Schultz, a journalism professor at The Meek School of Journalism and New Media. Ji Hoon Heo served as the executive producer for the documentary that employed the talents of student reporters and videographers who conducted interviews throughout the state.

The documentary will be screened by an audience for the first time at the Overby Center in the Meek School this December. The documentary team is currently working to finish the editing process, establish a social media presence and implement voiceover work. The team has asked Randall Pinkston, a former CBS News correspondent, who currently works as a freelance journalist for Al Jazeera America, to narrate the documentary. Pinkston, a native Mississippian, will also teach the class J330 Media Performance at the University of Mississippi during the winter session.

Production begins on University of Mississippi's casino documentary

Production began on "Casinos in Mississippi: Worth the Gamble?" in September with reporters seeking interviews with leaders across the state who could weigh in on the casino industry. The main question: How has the casino industry impacted Mississippi since casinos first came to the state 20 years ago? Was it worth the gamble? And what does the Mississippi casino industry look like today?

Reporters explored a variety of topics related to the Mississippi casino industry, including economic effects, gambling addiction and recovery, religion, history and politics.

Filming began in Biloxi, interviewing Keith Crosby, general manager of the Palace Casino Resort, and ended in Philadelphia, where Mayor James A. Young shared his opinion about the local Choctaw gaming industry.

Other interviews included Mayor Butch Brown of Vicksburg; Dr. Royal Walker, the first executive director of the Mississippi Gaming Commission; Senator Sollie B. Norwood; and Bryan Fischer, of the Ameircan Family Association.
